Asda’s £10 Champagne Louvel Fontaine is actually pretty good

champagne louvel fontaine

Oh, I know I shouldn’t say this. But Asda’s £10 Louvel Fontaine Champagne is actually quite nice. I’s so much safer to slate cheap fizz, but I can tell you what I experience, honestly and bravely. Well, maybe that’s overstating things. I tasted this at the Asda press tasting, and then wen’t back and bought a bottle from the shelves to check my first impressions.

It’s made for Asda by a small house called Champagne Gruet, and Asda have badged it as Louvel Fontaine, one of their soft brands. It used to be made elsewhere, but now its Gruet, based in Buxeuil in the Aube, who are making it for them. Gruet also make a Blanc de Blancs with equal parts Arcane, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc – that sound’s quite interesting. This is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir with 20% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier. You can see me taste it on camera below.
